New medical insurance benefit for faculty and staff traveling internationally

Due to increasing global travel of faculty and staff, Duke has introduced a new medical insurance benefit to provide coverage for those traveling internationally on Duke business for less than six months.

Cigna Global Health Benefits’ Medical Benefits Abroad (MBA) offers eligible employees and dependents supplemental benefit coverage for unexpected injuries and illnesses that may occur while traveling internationally on Duke business for less than six months.

Coverage under the plan is available at no additional cost for full-time benefits-eligible employees, spouse or same-sex partner and dependent children up to age 26. Employees must have primary coverage through Duke or another insurance provider.

No enrollment is necessary to receive the coverage. Employees only need to visit the Human Resources website and download a group ID card for the Medical Benefits Abroad program with Duke’s policy number. The plan generally covers the reasonable and customary charges associated with accidents or illnesses. There is no need to pay up front for medical expenses if using a Cigna international provider.

Cigna will also coordinate closely with Duke’s International SOS program, which provides travel assistance and evacuation services, including medical evacuations when necessary.

The program also includes a 24-hour international customer support line to assist employees who need help. For more information about the benefit, visit the Human Resources website at or call Duke Human Resources at 919-684-5600.
