This seminar will study comparative legal, political, and cultural issues relating to freedom of speech, the press, and other media in Ghana. In addition to a weekly class session, students in the seminar will spend their spring break (March 9-17, 2013) in Ghana assessing the legal and cultural issues in context, meeting with various interested groups and individuals, and deepening their understanding through hands-on experience outside of the classroom. Students will also be responsible for preparing a substantial collaborative written product by the end of the semester. Because of the collaborative nature of the writing, the seminar will not fulfill the upper-level writing requirement. The seminar will be graded on a regular basis, rather than credit/no credit. Grades will be based on class participation, extent of preparation for the trip, individual presentations, and contributions to the joint written product.
